- I've tried to compile 3 different versions picked up from one of those
- web sites and have only gotten 1 to successfully compile. And that 1
- doesn't want to run. I get something like, "Can't find appropriate X
- display" or something like that. And that was _after_ I set the DISPLAY
- variable. I'm at a loss. HELP! The only thing I know about the system is
- that it's got a sparc processor and a sun4 architechture. I've been using
- 'make withgcc'. Oh yah, I'm trying to run this thing using an Xterm. What
- else should I say... Well, I could (most likely, actually) be having such
- a hard time because, 1) the university sets the standard to use X11R4 as
- default. I had to 'discover' we had X11R5, which is of course still an
- old version, 2) I'm pretty sure our version of gcc is out of date, too. I
- don't know what they've done but the absence of the SEEK_SET et al macros
- is just stinkin' irritating, and 3) they've got about 50 million links
- from "old" paths to new ones which may or may not actually contain a new
- version of whatever was supposedly updated (yah, right). Also, there are at
- least 2 or 3 different copies of the same files in different directories
- (not just different paths leading to the same directory, oh no, they have to
- fill up those hard drives, you know). If anybody wants to take a stab at
- helping me I'd be very grateful. Just remember, I _am_ a unix newbie so
- go easy on me... :P Also, if you really need it I can go over pretty
- much exactly what I did and what the problems were. (Guess I should have
- done that to begin with but oh well, too late now. :P)
